Australian Fundraising News (January 2016)

Happy New Year to all our volunteers and supporters!

During the end of 2015 the State Reps grouped together in Sydney and held a workshop to discuss and plan for the next 12 month period. As you can see by the great photo the team ended the workshop with a fundraising event organised by the Sydney team. The “Rainforest Benefit” was a fun night and everyone who attended had a great night raising some much needed funds for our orangutans!

If you would like you to get involved in volunteering with TOP please contact Marion who will put you in touch with the Local representative in your area. Any amount of time you can spare helps!

You choose what you do and when you do it, knowing that proceeds of funds raised will go directly to saving orangutans. No experience is needed as you get to learn from your local co-ordinator and the other enthusiastic volunteers. Many join because they see the fun TOP volunteers have and the joy that comes from being a volunteer. There are so many opportunities you didn’t know even existed until you become a volunteer.

We had fantastic night of fun & information to help save the orangutan, tigers & elephants from extinction in the Sumatran Rainforests. The Band : FURIOUS FIVE had everyone dancing, the vibe was full of joy & hope to save these animals & their habitat. Leif danced, & could not stop smiling. I had my skates on & was in TOP gear, all night! It was wonderful to meet the Reps, great bunch of very inspiring people. Marion danced her legs off too, we all had so much fun. Rodney Clarke was our fabulous as MC & auctioneer!

70 people attended. Leif's power point talk raised so much awareness & interest, especially to those who have never attended any of our events before,

The results from TOP's auction, donations, raffle & merchandise totalled $3,500! Thanks everyone! A BIG thankyou to all volunteers who helped & everyone who donated items.

NSW TOP Christmas Party.
On Dec 6th at the Lentil As Anything Restaurant, we all watched the film: Racing Extinction. It was very inspiring to help us help our poor planet & its animals, & heart wrenching. We enjoyed vegan food & drinks, then a drink at The Bank Hotel in Newtown. Thanks to Rod, Bill, Shaz, Maria, Kim, Susannah, Mark & Rona, for attending.

When Leif sent out this appeal with doubled donations, I sent an email out to my TOP volunteers & other friends, for a donation as my birthday present, we raised $1040! Great effort, thanks everyone!

January is here! Our hearts and minds now turn to 2016 and bracing ourselves for a busy year ahead. There’s no faster way to refuel our energy than to stop for a minute, take a breath and congratulate ourselves on an amazing year. With all the crazy lead up to the end of the year, we look back with pride at how this wonderful community continue to be such fantastic supporters of The Orangutan Project.

Contributions by the ACT community for just the last three months of 2015 reached $13,000 to help the Orangutans and to protect their natural habitat. We were delighted to see so many adoptions bought as Christmas gifts that will continue to inspire throughout the year. Our chocolates and cookies were hot items (and absolutely delicious!) for the Christmas festivities, and our trash and treasure stalls (fabulously coordinated by Robyn with help from Anne and Diana) have been a wonderful success. Congratulations to Robyn on winning the Christmas raffle.

Planning for 2016 events includes a trivia night and a movie night (always a great excuse to get your family and friends together and have some fun), we are always looking for more chocolate and cookie sellers (email and she will show you how easy it is), sign-up or get to know your local volunteers by coming along to a volunteer meeting (details on the ‘upcoming events’ through the website), and if you want to contribute but time is beating you - feel free to donate items for the trash and treasure stalls. For details on becoming a volunteer, connecting with other volunteers through facebook, or donating please contact me - Therese O’Brien, ACT Regional Representative, email: We look forward to an inspiring year that connects us all to protect.

Thank you to all who have contributed in making 2015 another successful year for TOP Tasmania, whether it be volunteering their time, donating goods or donating money. Special mention goes to friends who donate on a regular basis including Tina Williams, John Chung, Rebecca and Ray Edwards, Lesley Cansdell, Glory Bamber, Robyn Marshall-Jung and her mum Eris Marshall. Their ongoing contributions are immense and hugely appreciated.

A second-hand stall was held at Kingston Shopping Centre on 29 November 2015 that raised nearly $400 and included donations from Kim Rettig and Lesley Cansdell for the TOP Christmas Appeal. Thank you so much to Kim, Fi, Hazel and especially Willow, Foxie and Layla (the 4-legged crew) for donating their time on the day.

We held a merchandise/information stall at Salamanca Markets on Saturday 19 December. Being so close to Christmas, tourists and locals were out in force buying up big for Christmas and contributed to over $1,100 in sales on the day. Thank you Eris Marshall for making the beautiful animal print Christmas stockings that sold out on the day. Also thank you to Eumarrah Store for another TOP tin totalling $140.

Kathy and her team in the north of the State held plant and produce stalls, raising $950. 3 more stalls are planned for the beginning of the year and a Trivia Night to be held mid-year.

2 second hand stalls on 10 and 17 January have been held at Kingston to offload a garage full of donated goods. Several hundred dollars have been made from them and I just want to thank everyone who continue to donate goods for these stalls. Many thanks to Kim and Hazel who always help out on these stalls where a lot of fun is always had.
